For their forth album campaign, the band were keen to investigate a more hand-made aesthetic while maintaining the strong conceptual approach of our previous covers. Our first experiments with the band referenced the fabric slings which are used to install sculptures in museum spaces. The sense of a precious object being treated with care seemed to equate with the more introspective and personal themes of the album. We chose classical and surrealist objects to populate the covers, all rendered in a rough, mis-registered style.

The dots are blind embossed into the business card creating a contrasting tactile and visual effect on each side. A poster featuring the bold version of Peg Board is available in the Wallzo shop.

A restrained and sober style is implemented throughout, punctuated with full-page quotes set in <a href="http://designmuseum.org/design/jock-kinneir-margaret-calvert"target="_blank">Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert’s Transport typeface. This is the typeface used on UK road signs and chosen as it evokes both the beauty and normalcy of the city that unites these images. We also designed a short run of promotional posters which feature four of Kevin’s iconic black and white images.

The design was christened ‘The Artifact’ and many individually crafted versions were produced to adorn the various album formats. The colours reference sculptural materials, in particular copper, and the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verdigris"target="_blank">verdigris which forms over time when it is exposed to air. In each instance The Artifact is deep embossed and the copper colour is acheived with metallic ink.

The forms we settled upon are children’s building blocks which have been split with a chisel. We then forced coloured plastic wedges into the splits. The forms embody Hot Chip’s distinctive sound; an appealing collision of genres and influences. A bold diagrammatic illustration style was chosen to represent the blocks, while the vinyl edition of the album features the shapes debossed into a black gatefold sleeve.
